10 Critical Missteps in Security

  1. Change Default Router Settings

    • Update default usernames and passwords.

    • Disable unused services like WPS or remote management.

  2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

    • Use strong, complex passwords for Wi-Fi and admin access.

    • Enable a password manager to keep track.

  3. Enable WPA3 (or at least WPA2) Encryption

    • Use the most secure Wi-Fi encryption available on your router.

    • Avoid using open or WEP-encrypted networks.

  4. Keep Firmware & Software Updated

    • Regularly update router firmware and connected device software.

    • Enable auto-updates where possible.

  5. Create a Guest Network

    • Keep visitors off your main network.

    • Limit guest network access to the internet only.

  6. Separate IoT Devices from Core Network

    • Smart TVs, cameras, and other IoT devices can be vulnerable.

    • Isolate them on a separate VLAN or guest network.

  7. Use a Firewall

    • Enable the router’s built-in firewall.

    • For advanced setups, consider a hardware firewall or UTM device.

  8. Implement Network Monitoring

    • Use tools or router apps to monitor who is connected.

    • Get alerts for unusual activity or unknown devices.

  9. Limit Physical Access

    • Keep networking equipment in a secure, controlled space.

    • Lock down admin panels to local access only when possible.

  10. Backup Your Configurations
